The AI coding tool that gets developers hooked is the one that wins. Here's what the usage data reveals.

We studied AI coding tool adoption patterns across 200 engineering teams. The findings surprised us.

The tool with the best code quality doesn't win. The tool with the best first-week experience wins.

GitHub Copilot dominates because the autocomplete feels magical immediately. You start typing and it suggests the next line. Instant dopamine. Doesn't matter if the suggestions are occasionally wrong. The feedback loop is tight enough that developers form habits fast.

Cursor gained ground because the "ask about your codebase" feature wowed people in demos. Even if you never use that feature again, the initial impression drove adoption.

Claude Code is winning complex use cases because the multi-file refactoring actually works. But the onboarding is worse. It takes longer to feel magical.

For SaaS founders building any productivity tool: optimize for the first 10 minutes, not the steady-state workflow. The tool that feels most impressive immediately captures the habit. Everything else is rationalization after the fact.

Developers will claim they chose their tools based on thoughtful evaluation. The data says they chose based on which one made them feel productive fastest.
