Picking Surgeon

Surgery related

I know this gets asked a lot, but here’s where my struggle lies. It’s not about picking the doctor as much as how do you decide if an endometriosis excision specialist, one of the doctors that generally only does endo excisions, usually out of network only, but seemingly much more advanced in skill and scope is the better route to go versus say, MIGS at like Brigham and Women’s?

I gratefully am in New England with access to Boston care. I keep thinking to myself if these endo specialized excision surgeons were the way to go everyone would always flock to them, but I imagine it has to do with cost and out of network coverages. Not everyone has out of network insurance and can afford their costs of these surgeons.

If this is a cost I can potentially manage, wouldn’t it be worth having my first surgery with someone like say, Dr. Liu over someone at Brigham MIGS so that it can potentially be my one and only surgery rather than a diagnostic lap followed by potentially a second more in depth excision later on?

My mom had endo and adeno with bowel involvement and I suspect that I have involvement too based on symptoms. However of course according to my basic gyn imaging is clea despite a cervix so friable it bleeds to the touch (yes, they can’t even get a pap that can be processed due to blood)

Additional imaging like a better quality internal ultrasound or MRI with the dye inserted marginally are likely not options given how I have had to have all my eczema under anesthesia to date , another reason I think Dr. Liu might be a better resource because it seems she does ultrasound imaging fist under anesthesia then the excision to avoid additional pain on the patient and to help inform her surgery.

Any feedback especially from her patients or Boston MIGS patients would be so greatly appreciated.
