I built a self-hosted personal AI assistant that runs on your own hardware!! (inspired in Openclaw)

Hello! I've built munAI, a self-hosted personal AI assistant that runs on your own machine. It’s also been inspired by NanoClaw and IronClaw and the idea of assistants that feel more capable, extensible, and closer to a real working system than just a chat interface.

I wanted something that feels more like a real background assistant than just another chatbot, but without handing over all my data and workflows to a third party.

So I made something that is:

  • self-hosted and local-first
  • model-agnostic
  • secure by default
  • auditable
  • proactive, not just reactive

It can run as a persistent background process, work through Telegram / web / CLI, store everything in plain files, and be extended with simple markdown-based skills. It also supports multiple model providers and is designed so you can actually inspect what it’s doing instead of treating it like a black box.

One thing I care a lot about is control: approvals for risky actions, workspace-scoped file access, and logs for tool calls / model calls / state changes.

If you’re into self-hosting, local AI, or building more personal assistants, I’d really love feedback.

I’d also like to expand it with web navigation capabilities using something like PinchTab, so it can browse sites, collect information, and act more independently online.
