Recovering from a mental health crisis during 12th grade,is a drop year viable?

NSFWAdvice

I’m currently in Class 12, and it’s been a rough ride. My 11th and 12th were derailed by a toxic home environment, a breakup, and untreated ADHD. I hit rock bottom mentally and relapsed into SH, but I’ve been working hard since January to stabilize through counseling and self-management.

My academics took a massive hit: my JEE prep is non-existent, and my Board exams for Physics and Chemistry were far below my potential. I’m currently using nicotine to manage my ADHD symptoms, but I am fully aware that this is a dangerous crutch and I am scared of the inevitable tolerance/withdrawal.

I have two main questions for this community:

  1. Is a drop year a realistic option for someone trying to rebuild their mental health, or will the pressure just trigger another spiral?
  2. How do I transition away from unhealthy coping mechanisms (like nicotine) to more sustainable ADHD management strategies while trying to study?

Any advice from people who have navigated a 'gap' or managed ADHD during competitive exams would be appreciated!
