5 things that actually helped me stop procrastinating
ok so i spent way too long watching productivity videos and reading about systems instead of actually getting stuff done lol
finally figured out some stuff that works. nothing groundbreaking but sharing in case it helps someone else
here's what actually moved the needle:
1. i started treating my to-do list like an actual limited resource
used to just dump everything into my task list. ended up with like 80 tasks and felt overwhelmed every time i opened it
now i ask myself: "if i could only work on 5 things this week, what would they be?"
everything else either gets deleted or goes into a "someday/maybe" list that i literally never look at (and thats fine bc if it was important id remember it)
this one change made me stop feeling guilty about not doing everything. bc you CANT do everything. accepting that was huge
i use melio tasks for this now bc it keeps things simple - just tasks and habits in one place.
2. time blocking but like... the lazy version
everyone talks about time blocking every 30 mins of your day. tried that. hated it. felt like a robot
here's what works: i block 2-3 chunks of "deep work" time and leave everything else unplanned
so my calendar just says:
9am-11:30am: deep work
2pm-4pm: deep work
everything else: flexible
during deep work = phone off, no slack, no email, just one task everything else = meetings, emails, life stuff, whatever
way less stressful and i actually stick to it. i just use google calendar for this nothing fancy
3. i stopped trying to build habits from scratch and just stacked them instead
tried to start meditating. failed after 3 days. tried to start journaling. lasted a week. tried to start working out. made it 2 weeks.
then i learned about habit stacking (i think from atomic habits?) and it actually works
instead of "i will meditate every day" its "after i brush my teeth, i meditate for 2 mins" instead of "i will journal" its "right after my morning coffee, i write 3 sentences"
linking new habits to existing ones makes them stick. your brain already does the first thing so the second thing just... happens
the streak tracking in my task app helps too bc seeing "14 days" makes me not want to break it. dumb but effective
4. the "2 minute rule" but i actually follow it now
if something takes less than 2 minutes i just do it immediately. dont add it to a list. dont plan it. just do it right now
reply to that text? do it put the dish in dishwasher? do it send that quick email? do it
this alone cleared like 30% of my mental clutter. all those tiny things that pile up and stress you out without you realizing it
the key is actually doing it tho. for like a month i kept thinking "oh ill do that later" and it defeated the whole purpose lol
5. i embraced the fact that some days are just gonna suck
this ones more mindset than system but whatever
used to beat myself up on unproductive days. "why cant i focus" "why am i so lazy" etc
now i just accept that some days my brain doesnt work. maybe i slept bad, maybe im stressed about something, maybe mercury is in retrograde idk
on those days i just do easy tasks. organize files. answer emails. watch course videos. stuff that needs to get done but doesnt require much brainpower
fighting against a bad brain day just makes it worse. work with what youve got
what didnt work (so you can avoid it)
pomodoro technique - the timer stressed me out more than it helped. if im in flow i dont wanna stop after 25 mins??
morning pages - writing 3 pages every morning took like 45 mins and i ran out of things to say by day 4
notion databases - spent 2 weeks building the perfect system. used it for 3 days. now it just sits there mocking me
trying to wake up at 5am - im not built for that life. tried for a month. was just tired and grumpy
your mileage may vary but these were all productivity theater for me. looked productive, wasnt actually productive
the thing nobody talks about
the best productivity system is the one youll still be using in 3 months
i wasted so much time building elaborate systems that looked cool but i abandoned after a week
simple and consistent beats perfect and abandoned every time
anyway thats my ramble. probably missed some stuff but whatever
if you made it this far drop your best productivity tip that actually works for you. always looking for ideas (but trying not to change my system every week lol)
