should we date or stay fwb

so basically me and this guy have been fwb since last summer. we had a little bit where we tried dating but it was honestly too soon/didn’t know each other well enough but now i feel like im looking for something a bit more. but i also don’t know if he wants something more bc he hasn’t asked and hes the one who initially broke off the relationship. (we still stayed fwb tho). so should i text and ask or should i just let it be
