I regret being too generous with our bridal party
I know it’s common to regret spending so much on a dress, vendor, element of a reception, etc. I have those too. But I also (embarrassingly) regret being so damn generous to everyone around us leading up to the wedding lol. I think we were just so blissed out that we wanted to treat for everything and in retrospect it was too much. We’re not rich. My husband has crazy high ongoing medical expenses through no fault of his own. Just some examples:
husband surprised me with a super fancy hotel brunch the morning after we got engaged. He had invited and paid for my parents, his brother’s family of four, my two close friends and a second-cousin of mine. The brother and my second-cousin do well but are the type to always have their hand out and never reciprocate.
A couple weeks later the same two friends throw us an engagement party (casual, guests bought their own drinks, hosts didn’t pay for anything) and we took them out for another nice meal as a thank you. Then after that, it was just continuously treating our bridal party for dinners out when we’d convene, picking up tabs, other friends who got newly engaged we’d pay for their dinner too…it’s like it became a habit that we really should have reigned in. We paid for all the bridesmaid dresses (luckily just $45 each) and the groomsmen clothes for the morning ceremony (of my husband’s culture. Then they rented their own tuxes but we paid for our two dads, three brothers and at leas for one friend). Then bridal party gifts. Then big gifts for any of their birthdays. I mean, we love everyone and are grateful for their friendship but showing love doesn’t have to be with money!
Then some of these same friends got married and we spent a lot being on the other side, further confirming how “extra” we were being as the bride & groom. Can anyone relate to this? I want to go back in time and just be less…generous?
