Can orange peel be safely removed?

In a post not related to orange peel I saw passing mentions that it couldn't be removed without causing clearcoat failure in 3-5 years. I also see lots of mentions of removing orange peel.

I have orange peel on my new truck and have considered having it removed and a ceramic coating done. I'd like to know if it can safely be done or if it will cause clearcoat failure so I thought I'd start a post dedicated to the topic and see what information people have to offer. I'm hoping to get responses from professional detailers who have been doing it long enough to have seen how things hold up.
