Tips for US first timer

Hey guys, I will be in Santa Cruz for the next 3 months for a research project at UCSC. I've never been to the US before, so do you have any essentials or tips for a first timer in the US / west coast? Of course I have visa and insurance, I am talking about things that make everyday easier, uber, venmo, sunscreen, idk, ot any insider tips.
