Takeaways:

  • Huge win on adding forward depth and secondary scoring. The obvious addtion here is Bobby Brink, who is a very capable third line scoring winger who still might have some second line and powerplay upside. Flipping Jiricek for Brink straight up was a very, very good deal. But also notable is the addition of Nick Foligno and McCarron, who give the Bottom 6 a ton of flexibility. With the addition of Robby Fabbri, John Hynes can now construct a bottom six with a Chinese menu to add grit, energy, veteran experience, and offensive skill—and that's even with Moose and Mojo out of the lineup. The Wild are in a much better place than going into the playoffs relying on Hinostroza and Pitlick.
  • Bolstered Defensive Corps. Enter Jeff Petry. Prior to the deadline, the Wild had a reliable third paring LD plug-in with Daemon Hunt. But the right side was always a cause for concern, primarily using Jiricek in the absence of Bogosian. Although Spurgeon has managed to stay in the lineup, his history the last few years is a concern to consider. While Petry's best days are well behind him, he's an easy depth addition who can still be trusted with bottom pairing minutes and adds veteran experience for a playoff push. In the event Faber or Spurgeon go down, Hynes can now mull over whether to increase Bogosian or Petry's minutes, or whether to give David Spacek the middle pair assignment.
  • More Defensive Zone and PK Faceoff Talent. One of the most glaring issues for the Wild has been losing clutch faceoffs in the defensive zone. Prior to the deadline, only Sturm was our "gotta win" faceoff man, with JEEK as a capable but underwhelming option. McCarron isn't just a big, gritty forward—he's a capable penalty killer. Also, Robby Fabbri adds some value as a guy who can play down the middle. He's unlikely to be a regular PK option, but he can still step in for a defensive zone draw if needed.
  • No Top 6 Center is disappointing, but not critical. Indeed, had the Wild been able to land Vincent Trochek or Ryan O'Reilly, this would have been a perfect deadline. But if the question is whether the Wild are a better team with the trades it made versus just landing a 2C like Trocheck or ROR, I would submit the former is the better option. A Wild roster with multiple Bottom 6 plug and play options makes the Wild a more versatile and deeper squad than simply adding one 2C and pushing talent down the chart.
  • From a total perspective, the Wild did very well. To anyone who believes the Wild failed, here is the big question for you: Who landed Trocheck, Thomas, Stamkos, ROR, etc.? The answer is nobody. Sure, Colorado landed Kadri who reportedly wouldn't go to Minnesota in the first place and I would submit didn't address our needs well. And yes, NYI landed Brayden Schenn... for Drouin, a middling goaltending prospect, and a 1st and 3d Rd pick in 2026, which is a great haul for St. Louis and likely would have been even more from Minnesota with Division tax. Case in point: Almost nobody got the big 1/2C targets.

Conclusion: Of all the buying teams this trade deadline, very few addressed their needs anywhere near as well as Minnesota. The Wild are now highly skilled, fast, big, gritty, and deep with plenty of experience. The lack of acquiring a Top 6 Center is present, but should not be a big distraction. The Wild may not have made a blockbuster, but it got much, much better.
