Best way to clean?

I was gifted a bass from a friend. It had sit in a storage unit for a very long time and has a considerable amount of dust and dirt on it. There is a lot on the sides of the pickups. What would be the best way to clean this up without damaging anything on the inside or outside of the guitar? Would alcohol be okay even if it sinks past the pickups into the guitar?
