Time specific spawns question

Say, if a pokemon spawns at night. Does it have to be night when you place AND check the habitat? Or if you say place the habitat at night time, put the game down, then open it again in the morning, will the spawn have taken place at night and then you get the night pokemon when you play again?

Random question I know but I feel like it could help
