AITA for not feeling bad about my MIL?

For starters, my MIL has always been pretty selfish, territorial, and controlling about her world, especially when it comes to her family and mainly her children. She has also always been someone who lives in fear and negativity about everything (i.e. negativity about her children traveling anywhere she’s never been claiming dangers and basically marking us for death if we travel to unknown places, conversions about terminal illness striking anyone she cares for we, controlling things by claiming “other people” said the things she’s wanting to control, fishing for info however way she deems necessary even if she needs to lie, sending my husband and I links to terrible things happening where we live or where we plan to go, etc.) masking it as “worry for her children” because she loves them so much. She is also the guilt trip queen who expects everyone to visit her all while having little to no intentions of visiting anyone. Everyone always has to come to her. She also dances on our boundaries for our child or is choosing to completely ignore some while “respecting” others. This is a big one for me which is why instead of expecting her learn or change (which she won’t), we are now forced to make decisions for our family that she won’t like.

It’s obvious that my MIL has become toxic over the years and now that my husband and I have a child, I’d rather not live near her or have our child near someone like that.

My husband and I recently announced a move, which we are very excited about. New opportunities, new home, and a new place we could really see ourselves settling for a while. Now let’s rewind for a minute…

Now, way before the announcement, my MIL has been wanting us to move to her area. She would always prematurely send us links to house listings in her area and really try her best to sell her town and surrounding areas. Remember this!

Before even deciding on a place to move, my husband tells his parents of his interviews and offers. Bad idea! My In Laws find out we are between 3 places (1 place being where my parents used to live). After hearing the news, my MIL tells my husband that he needs to think about both families, not just 1 (insinuating my family). I’m sorry, was she thinking about both families when she was sending us links to be next door neighbors? Don’t miss this! She never once cared about my family, she just wants her son and grandchild near her. She asked my husband to do something she never does…think about both families!

Now, we made a decision! Yay!! After announcing our pending move, she asks if my parents (who used to live in the area we are moving to) are going to move back. We tell her, “not that we know of.” (I don’t think she believes us, but we truly don’t know) She also asked how long we plan on staying there (We also don’t know). Basically asking all the questions one would ask if you are basically freaking out. Oh, side note: she is now sending us negative links of unfavorable weather, crime, you name it, about the place we chose to move to. All in all, I have gathered that she would rather see us alone anywhere than living near my parents. Which, is very selfish in my opinion.

Please tell me I’m not the only one who sometimes wishes that she get a taste of her own medicine with her negativity coming back to bite her like a “what comes around goes around” situation?

I would be lying if I said I wasn’t excited to live a plane ride away from her. I am over the moon about it! And I’m relieved that my son, at least for now, doesn’t have to be around her kind of influence very often. Had she been different and less toxic maybe things would’ve worked out in her favor, but at present, I’m SO glad she didn’t get what she wanted!

I feel terrible that I don’t feel bad about any of this!
