is it worth it to seek a diagnosis?
i’m 19 and have suspected that i may have BPD for years. i am friends with several people with diagnosed BPD who have validated this suspicion. i also feel like in the last year the symptoms have become more and more pronounced — i’ve been in three incredibly messy relationships, gone down an incredibly self-destructive spiral, formed a reliance on weed, alcohol, and sh, cannot stop myself from engaging in degrading and unsafe sex, and overall just feel like i’m drowning in incredibly intense and overwhelming emotions that i have zero clue how to handle.
i have no clue how to begin healing from this. on one hand, i am diagnosed with major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety, and ADHD. i am already on antidepressants and stimulants, and while they do help mediate my emotions, it feels like they’re not doing enough. i’m also in therapy but my therapist specializes in sexual trauma. while their area of expertise is applicable to me, i feel like there’s more to unpack relating to my current behavior that isn’t entirely informed by a history of sa. on the other hand, i know BPD is an incredibly stigmatized diagnosis and that having a clinical diagnosis wouldn’t necessarily change anything about the treatment i’m able to access.
is there any benefit to seeking a diagnosis? even if i’m not diagnosed, should i try to access bpd-specific treatment? are there any free resources anyone could recommend? i guess i’m basically just asking like… for any guidance on what my first step should be. how the hell do i begin pulling myself out of this absolute hell i’ve built for myself.
