38M late to the party & need some guidance
38M seeking some guidance. I’ve been reading this sub for the last few weeks and it’s been extremely helpful.
A little about my situation: I’ve always participated in my company 401(k) plans and taken advantage of the company match so I wasn’t leaving free money on the table. However, I really haven’t done much beyond that.
I bought a house a few years ago and have since paid off my student loans and car loans, so the mortgage is my only remaining debt.
I recently adjusted my 401(k) contributions so that I’ll max it out by the end of the year (taking into account that my employer contributions are done on a per-pay-period basis). At the next open enrollment, I plan to start contributing to an HSA and max that out every year as well.
Unfortunately, my income exceeds the limits for a Roth IRA directly. I still need to do a bit more research, but I think I should be doing a backdoor Roth. That would allow me to contribute the max $7k, and then convert it to a Roth.
Right now I have about $130k cash sitting in a standard savings account (I know… it should have been in a HYSA). My thought was to move $30k into a HYSA as an emergency fund and then open a Fidelity brokerage account and invest the remaining $100k into:
- 70% VTI
- 30% VXUS
From there, my plan would be to add monthly contributions of around $1k–$2k into those index funds and basically just chill from there.
I’m not expecting to retire before 65. How does this plan sound? Anything I should change or think about doing differently?
Thanks in advance!
