Bolt Action for home defense?

Hi! I’m new to guns and 20 years old and have a hunting license! So I can legally buy a firearm (except handguns and semi auto rifles). Would a bolt action like a 308 be good for an all around rifle for hunting, home defense (i would use expansive 308 designed for home defense), and target shooting? Thanks for any input and feedback! Would love suggestions as a newbie :)
