Fired after one week... ( Long vent)
Okay, this is a new one for me. I've never been fired in my LIFE, let alone after five days, so I'm a little shocked. I must say I should've trusted my instincts. But because I need a job, I bypassed them. Before we get into the meat and potatoes of everything, here is a little information about me. I have 9 years of marketing and sales experience, with my last job being a Director. However, due to extreme burnout and going back to school, I decided to take on a job that would be less demanding, such as an administrative role. But with the current job market, jobs have been quite scarce, so I was open to everything. I applied to a funeral home. I don't have experience in this field, but I knew I could be a good support. I didn't hide or lie about my experience, for they actually seemed quite pleased with my resume, especially since " I am so young."
But anyway, phone and in-person interview went great, it wasn't until after the interview that things got weird. During the interview, they asked me why I left my job, and to that I responded that I decided to go back to school. Then they proceeded to ask me if I live alone. When I said yes, they seemed to be puzzled, but continued on with the interview. It wasn't until a few days afterwards when I followed up with them. They asked me the wildest question any employer ever asked me, " So we have a few follow-up questions, we are just so confused about how you were able to leave a good-paying job, with 401K and benefits ( mind you, they don't know my previous salary), just for school? How could you ever afford something like that? After a few moments, I responded with " well I just saved up for it." She then continued to ask me the same question and proceeded to say, "You can trust me, you can be honest and tell me the truth. Why did you leave your job? I know Cooprate America can be really tough. " Feeling like I was being pushed into a corner, I confessed that I am dyslexic and have ADHD, and certain academic courses have been a struggle for me, so I had to sacrifice my job so I could finish my degree. I then told her that my dyslexia never affected my work performance, nor has my ADHD. I even asked her if I could have Grammarly to use for accommodations, and she said yes. She said that she also has dyslexia, which I feel was probably not true. But what's even crazier is that when she called my references, she asked them the same question about how I was able to afford leaving the job.
So afterwards, they gave me a verbal offer, and a week later, gave me a written offer which stated with a temp-to-hire probation. Which is weird because I live in an at-will state, and we call it a probation period. I asked a whole bunch of questions about. But they kept on saying "that I could trust them, and that they have every intention to hire me permanently." After signing everything, I asked her to give me a list of what my job duties were and their expectations to ensure my success, which she said okay to. But never got. After I signed it, it took forever for them to get a starting date. It was just so unorganized that they literally texted me late Sunday evening to let me know I could start that Monday. Craziness.
But as soon as Monday came, they were all over the place! I could tell that they were not prepared for me at all, they were just throwing me into things with no context, it felt as if we were starting in the middle of the process, and they just hoped I would figure it out the beginning and end out by myself. To help stabilize, I asked them to give me a list of all the routines so I can know what to do when I first get to work, during work, and when we close. They said they would give that to me, but I never received it. Tuesday comes and goes, and they were showering me with compliments about how I was so smart and that I was catching on fast, blah blah. But later that day, before I was leaving, I found the hiring manager and my other co- worker whispering about me about how I am just sitting there and just waiting for them to train me. They also talked about how weird it was that I sway side to side in my chair, which I do a lot when I am stimming. On Wednesday, I was having spelling difficulties with some words, but I was able to correct them due to having a dictionary on my phone. I can tell it was frustrating them, because the hiring manager asked me to type something with the word co-worker in it, and she literally said out loud in front of everyone, " Co-worker is spelled C.O. dash W.O.R.K.E.R." Which took me by surprise because I had no trouble with that word.
Thursday, I had to leave early due to a family emergency, and then today, my coworker kept on side-eyeing me as soon as I got in. Then suddenly, the owner, coworker, and hiring manager went into another room, and I just knew I was getting fired. After they came out, my co-worker started being fake nice to me, telling me how it was such a wonderful today is. When the hiring manager came and grabbed me, my shady co-worker went into hiding. But I was prepared, though, I asked if I needed to grab my purse, she dared to laugh at me and say everything is fine, there is no problem, "we are just going to talk to you.' Welp, that was a lie; they gave me a list of everything wrong, and 95% of that was a nod to my dyslexia and ADHD. They also said that I didn't learn the systems fast enough and that they couldn't trust me on the phone or with grieving families. They also said I dressed unprofessionally because I wore a jacket when I was in the office. I wore my jacket, which is work-appropriate because the office was right outside the morgue, and it's cold. Mind you, no one mentioned anything to me about this not being okay.
Honestly, no one mentioned any of the reasons why they fired me before. They told me not to answer the phones yet, because I need to be trained on what to say first. Not only that, but they just kept on complimenting me. To be honest, I actually gave them a reason; when I had to leave early Thursday due to a family emergency, but that was somehow not mentioned. When I told them how unorganized their training was, they told me, "Well, sometimes we don't have time to sit there and train; sometimes we just need the person to start working and do their own thing." Then, when I followed up on the routine list, I asked my coworker, and they said: "oh they don't have one. because they just start working." WTF hahaha.
To be honest, I felt like crap because it was such a short time, like good god, only 5 days, but after writing this, I think I dodged a bullet. But what do you guys think? Have you guys experienced this?
