Play the old Nancy Drew games in your browser!

#01 SECRETS CAN KILL ๐Ÿ““

Hey everyone! First time poster here with some exciting news... My brother and I grew up absolutely hooked on the Her Interactive Nancy Drew games - they were a huge part of our childhood and honestly still hold up. That nostalgia eventually sent me down a bit of a rabbit hole, and long story short... I've been building a way to play them in your browser, starting with the original *Secrets Can Kill (*with Stay Tuned for Danger in testing - having some issues with the gameplay logic though.) I'm far enough along that I need some testers to help me get the project over the finish line (a guy can only play through the game so many times to test things!)

What does that mean exactly? You can play it on any device with a modern browser. No downloading emulators. No digging through sketchy websites for old installer files. No fussing with compatibility settings. You just open a link, on your laptop, your iPad, your phone, and the game loads. That's it. Starting with Secrets Can Kill and hopefully more to follow if things go well. You should even be able to load .SAV files from the original game into the browser-based version.

The engine currently has some problems (these are just off the top of my head):

  1. Character and video animations load VERY SLOW, I'd recommend keeping them off during testing. Character audio loads alright but may still be slow or load too late. Clicking Nancy's responses may play the response at the same time the other character is talking.

  2. The telephone dialing system isn't implemented yet and won't work.

  3. Some game music plays at the wrong time, some sound effects don't play properly.

  4. Not all game puzzles are implemented yet.

  5. Clicking inventory items onto hotspots (i.e. turning on the TV) don't work yet - if you have an item in your inventory needed for a scene, clicking the hotspot will

  6. There's a DEBUG menu with a ton of options to help you test things. It will also add overlays onto the game screen that show you the "hotspots" of where you can hover your mouse over and click.

  7. Day/Night transitions don't work organically, but the game should still play through.

Why am I doing this? Purely out of love for these games. They deserve to be preserved and actually playable by people who want to revisit them, not locked behind 25-year-old software that barely runs on modern computers.

What's the catch? What about copyright? It's still a work in progress, so expect some rough edges! Also, to access it you'll need to confirm that you own a legitimate copy of the game. This is a fan preservation project and I want to keep it respectful and above board.

If you'd love to take it for a spin and share some feedback, drop a comment or send me a DM. Would love to get some fellow fans involved! ๐Ÿ”
