Promedia 2.1 Remove Speaker Stands?

Due to space constraints, I'm planning to put the speakers sideways on my desk, though the metal stands on the speakers don't seem to want to come off. I have the newer model variants of these with the new preamp plug and nondetachable cables, so are these metal stands not removable anymore? I unscrewed the one screw on the bottom of both speakers and tried pulling the stand away and it's just stuck in there.
