Is it really a terrible idea to use 240 volt dryer outlet to charge EV?
Last year I had an electrician come by to look at options to install a Level 2 EV charger in our garage. The cheapest option by far would be to just install a 240 volt dryer outlet to plug into, even though it would charge as efficiently as a specialized EV charger.
The electrician told me that was a terrible idea, that he knew people who had dryer outlets “melt in their walls” because they aren’t designed to be used like that. But I know so many folks who charge that way and have never heard of anyone having issues.
Is charging off a dryer outlet truly a recipe for disaster? Are there any installation or outlet type considerations to make it safe?
Thanks so much for any input!
