Need advice on paying for an internship

I’m a third year undergraduate biology student and I want to go into conservation/ecology in the future. I recently wanted experience so I’m planning on taking an internship with GVI in a month. However, I would pay $4000CA for the whole trip, not including the flight.

I have heard bad things about GVI but need the experience. But if jobs will overlook an internship I paid for, is it a waste of money?

Any advice would be helpful :)
