After my first semester of college, I realized I actually really dislike the traditional way of learning. Despite my dream career requiring a masters degree, I decided it wasn’t worth the student debt and pain for six years. So recently I turned to cosmetology as that was another career path I was considering.

I’d say my family and I are kinda poor. We don’t go without, but we’re kinda just scraping by. The community college’s cosmetology program is a little over 10K, and that’s not even including books or supplies. I can’t afford that. The only way for me to get the education I need without going into debt is through an apprenticeship at a salon. I’ve applied to nearly every apprenticeship program offered in my county, and I’ve been denied by all of them. I feel so confused and frustrated.

I know apprenticeships are competitive, but for the last salon I interviewed with, I thought it went really well. They seemed to like me, the education director, teacher, and even some of the other stylists and barbers I chatted with were really sweet to me. But when I followed up, I was told I didn’t make it to the next round of the interview process? Which was pretty upsetting to me because they don’t even make their “final decisions” until July or August! Beforehand, we only got to meet for a brief overview of the program, and a really short interview + shadow day. I feel like that’s not enough to go off of to really get a good picture on if someone is compatible or not. But IDK, maybe I’m just saying that to argue against their decision or make excuses for myself. I genuinely don’t know what I’m doing wrong. And it’s dumb, but this rejection in particular kind of hurts LOL IDK I’m gonna keep searching and applying to ones even outside of my county but yeah :/

Anyways, I got yogurt with granola and apple slices. It’s more of a girl snack but whatever :P

interviewing is rough
