I keep failing probation periods at new jobs. Am I the problem?
Hey everyone, I’d really appreciate some outside perspective because I’m starting to doubt myself.
I’m 32F and I’ve always considered myself a responsible and hardworking person. I take my work seriously, try to do things properly, and generally commit fully to my responsibilities. I’ve rarely made serious mistakes at work.
But I keep running into the same problem: I can’t seem to stay in jobs long term.
Over the past five years I’ve had four different jobs. Things usually start out fine, but eventually some kind of conflict develops (often with a manager), and I either leave or get fired.
In the last six months it happened twice again — I didn’t pass the probation period at two different jobs. In both cases I wasn’t given a clear explanation, which makes me wonder if the problem might actually be me.
I’m not rude and I try to keep communication professional. However, I do tend to notice when people start pushing boundaries or trying to offload their work onto me.
At first I ignore it, but if it continues I push back — usually by sticking strictly to my role and the official processes instead of covering for others or doing extra work outside my responsibilities.
That’s usually when people start getting irritated, and eventually conflict appears.
The pattern seems to repeat: either I leave, or I’m asked to leave.
Now my confidence is really shaken. After failing probation twice in a row, I’m starting to feel desperate and afraid I’ll fail again at the next job.
Do you think I might be missing something about how I come across at work?
