AITAH for ignoring my club sport team after being disrespected?
So I'm part of our club rugby team which really isn't all that serious. Since the Spring semester started I've had a great attendance record. We're not even practicing seriously, just playing pickup basketball because it's too cold to be outdoors, but I've still come to pretty much every practice. Every time I'm there I hear the captains complaining about how people aren't messaging in advance when they don't show up, and people are skipping for no reason.
On Tuesday I was extremely busy, so recognizing these concerns I sent a very simple message, "out today, very busy (like actually, not just skipping)." I wanted to listen to their concerns and be communicative, and provide accountability/an actual reason for why I wasn't showing up. The captain responds with "dude just lie, like you're actually such an asshole." First of all, I don't even know what that's trying to say. It's vaguely accusatory and admonishing, but certainly disrespectful. I was essentially trying to be nice, again provide some sort of accountability, and he spits it in my face.
Then he has the absolute temerity to send it to the whole groupchat with the caption "this kid isn't ready for the rugby inquisition" as if I'm gonna get expelled from the team. Like ok, f*ck you then, I try to be kind and in return I get clowned on.
I was especially angry because I was communicating with a friend of mine who also skipped on tuesday and sent a similar message along the lines of "im super busy today, I'll try to be there thursday" and he didn't get anything in return. Like we're skipping for the same reason--because we're busy with work--and I'm the one getting punished for it.
I no longer feel any obligation to communicate or even show up going forward. I'm not even good at the sport--I'm skinny, don't have the build for it, bad coordination, unconfident on the field, but I've tried my hardest to remain committed up until this point, and this is what I get for it?
Am I overreacting? Did I say or do something seriously egregious? I don't know, I felt seriously insulted and I don't want to forgive that so easily. I believe you don't have to put up with disrespect from anyone, not a teacher, woman, parent, elder, etc. The most important thing you have as a man is your dignity/sense of self-worth, and if someone violates that they can go f*ck themselves.
