Does the LDS church help members with serious criminal charges?

I am aware of someone from my past that had a temple recommend and attended church regularly. I doubt that is the case in the recent past seeing they are charged with 6 serious felonies. Does the church ever offer legal defense? I was reading there is a society called J Paul Reuben, but didn't know if that extended beyond typical legal needs.
