My chances in Neurology?

Is it possible to match into Neurology as a USMD but with red flags? (Remediated 1 yr preclinicals, 1 yr loa health-related, step 2: 23x)

Some background: Tier 1 med school. P/F preclinicals. P on step 1 first attempt. Bottom quartile, no clerkship failures (avg to good evals, just never made shelf cut offs for honors), no research output, but decent amount of ECs (1 neuro). Currently, no neuro mentor network for LOR but working on changing that and research.

(1) If it is possible, how many programs do I apply to (like how broadly, 80, 100 maybe)?

(2) Do you have any suggestions on how I can improve?

Would be happy to match anywhere honestly.

Looking for input from anyone who knows more about this or those who applied this past cycle/ very recently. Also would welcome any suggestions from neuro PGYs if they’re on this subreddit. Thank you.
