Anyone see Cop (1988)?
It's the adaptation of Blood on the Moon and I kind of like it better than the novel. It shows that what a good adaptation can do for the reputation of a novel.
The big thing is that it trims out all the psycho-sexual stuff from the killer and focuses purely on Hopkins. That part is played by, of course, James Woods and he ROCKS in this movie. He's an absolute menace who's out to kill or fuck everyone involved in the case. It's lean, mean and growls with sleezy style. Plus the ending is one of the all time greats.
I think Ellroy likes it, or at least did at one point. In one of the 90s documentaries, he mentions Hollywood can send him a check if they want, but he doesn't care for their ideas, except from the director of Cop, who he respects.
