**The Facts: Bhopal Metro (as of March 2026)**

* **The Ridership Slump:** Official data from January 2026 shows that on some weekdays, ridership actually fell as low as **275 passengers per day**. On average, it struggles to cross **1,290 tickets** daily for its 8-station priority corridor.
* **The Financial Drain:** The daily operational cost is approximately **₹8 lakh**, while ticket revenue is only around **₹39,000**. This means it’s recovering less than **5%** of its running costs.
* **The Cost Escalation:** You are spot on about the waste; the project cost jumped from an initial estimate of ₹6,941 crore to over **₹10,033 crore** due to years of delays.

he attached image compares Bhopal and Vizag, but as an Odia, it makes me think deeply about the **₹6,255 crore** Phase 1 of the Bhubaneswar Metro.

Bhopal is currently a "Ghost Metro." It’s averaging just **30 passengers per trip**, and the government is losing lakhs of rupees every single day just to keep the lights on. If a city with Bhopal's density can’t make it work, are we sure Bhubaneswar—which is still very much a "scooter and Mo Bus" city—is ready?

**My take on why we should pause:**

1. **Regional Inequality:** Large parts of Southern and Western Odisha still lack basic healthcare, all-weather roads, and stable electricity. Does it make sense to dump ₹6,000+ crore into a 26km stretch in the capital while the rest of the state is underdeveloped?
2. **The "White Elephant" Risk:** Metro projects are high-prestige but high-maintenance. If the ridership doesn't hit the projected 2.2 lakh/day (which Bhopal also failed to do), the taxpayers of Odisha will be subsidizing empty trains for decades.
3. **Minimum Standard First:** We should focus on achieving a "minimum standard of living" across all 30 districts before building "vanity projects" in the Twin Cities.

Is a Metro really progress if it's just a shiny train running through a state where basic infrastructure is still a luxury in many blocks? Let’s discuss.

Why the Bhopal Metro failure should be a warning for the Bhubaneswar Metro project
