GRIME question

Alright lads, currently fighting Giant of the eyes. I'm parrying the attacks, pulling etc... but my breath gauge isn't filling up whatsoever so I can't heal. I don't think devs are stupid enough not to incorporate healing during boss fights so I must be doing something wrong. I'm leaning towards the ladder, or are they??????
