Putty vs Silicone?

This seems to be a hot debate amongst the plumbing community on whether it’s best to set a drain in plumbers putty or silicone. Some swear by silicone, others, putty. Just would like to see what some of your first hand experience working with either is. I’d especially like to hear from the service guys out there and see when you’re coming to fix a leaky drain if it seems to be more silicone or putty related where that side of the seal has been the problem. If it were your drain, what are you using?
