At ten years old, I was asked to write a letter to my future self.

The assignment was simple: imagine your life fifteen years from now and describe who you would become. What job would you have? What kind of life would you build?

Around the classroom, my classmates wrote with surprising certainty. Some wanted to become doctors, others engineers or entrepreneurs. Many described the houses they would own, the cars they would drive, and even the number of children they planned to have.

Even at ten years old, the blueprint for success seemed already defined.

I remember feeling strangely disconnected from that certainty.

In my essay, perhaps because I have always been slightly resistant to expectations, I wrote something very different. I said I wanted to become a bartender, a DJ, or maybe both. I wanted to travel, meet new people, learn about different cultures, surf whenever possible, and — above everything else — be happy.

To me, that sounded like a perfectly reasonable life.

To others, it did not.

My answer was met with immediate criticism. I was told that I needed to think more seriously about my future. That I needed a proper career. That if I didn’t define my path early, I risked becoming a “nobody.”

At ten years old, that word carries a certain weight.

Looking back now, at thirty, I find it strange that a child’s desire to explore the world and pursue happiness could be interpreted as a lack of ambition.

But perhaps that moment revealed something deeper: how early society begins teaching us what success is supposed to look like.

# The Blueprint We Inherit

Most of us do not consciously choose our definition of success.

We inherit it.

From schools, from families, from culture, from subtle social pressure that shapes our decisions long before we realize it is happening. The formula is presented as obvious:

Study hard.
Choose a respectable career.
Earn well.
Buy a house.
Build stability.

If everything goes according to plan, happiness is supposed to follow somewhere along the way.

It is a convincing narrative. After all, stability, education, and ambition are not bad things. They are often necessary.

But what is rarely questioned is whether this path actually leads to fulfillment for everyone who follows it.

Or whether it simply produces a life that looks successful from the outside.

# The Quiet Shift in How We Define Wealth

Over the past two decades, I have noticed something interesting.

Many people are quietly redefining what wealth means.

Some leave corporate careers to travel. Others build small businesses that prioritize freedom over scale. Some move closer to nature, simplify their lives, or pursue work that pays less but feels more meaningful.

From a traditional perspective, these choices may look like a step backward.

Yet many of these people appear calmer, more present, and — perhaps most importantly — more satisfied with their lives.

They may not be rich in the conventional sense.

But they often seem wealthy in ways that are harder to measure.

Time.
Autonomy.
Peace of mind.

These forms of wealth rarely appear on résumés or financial statements, yet they shape the quality of a life more profoundly than most status symbols.

# The Life I Built

Today, my life looks very different from the one I described in that childhood essay.

I became a lawyer.
I completed a master’s degree.
By most conventional standards, I followed the path I was expected to follow.

These are real achievements, and I do not dismiss them.

But sometimes I wonder whether they reflect the life I truly wanted — or the life I believed I was supposed to want.

For many people, success becomes a performance. A series of milestones meant to signal competence, intelligence, and social value.

A career title.
A degree.
A promotion.

Each achievement quietly reinforcing the idea that we are moving in the right direction.

But occasionally, a more uncomfortable question appears:

**Who were we trying to convince all along?**

Ourselves — or everyone else?

# The Illusion of Other People’s Judgement

One realization tends to arrive with age: most people are not paying as much attention to us as we think.

The pressure we feel to impress others often comes from a misunderstanding. We imagine that society is constantly evaluating our choices.

In reality, most people are busy navigating their own fears, insecurities, and expectations.

The competition we perceive is often more psychological than real.

Ironically, some of the most educated and intellectually accomplished people I have met were also the least concerned with status. They rarely cared whether someone else held the same degree, earned the same income, or followed the same path.

Perhaps because they understood something simple.

External markers of success lose much of their meaning once basic needs are met.

As the saying goes:

**You only care about money when you need it.**

# Rethinking the original classroom essay

Looking back at that classroom assignment, I realize the real question was never about choosing a specific career.

The real question was much harder.

**What kind of life do you want to live?**

It is a question most of us postpone for years, sometimes decades.

Because answering it honestly can be uncomfortable. It may force us to admit that some of our goals were never truly ours to begin with.

But perhaps purpose is not something we discover once and for all.

Perhaps it is something we slowly construct — through reflection, through experience, and through the courage to occasionally step outside the expectations we inherited.

And maybe the ten-year-old version of ourselves understood something that adulthood often complicates:

Wanting to explore the world, meet people, and simply be happy is not a lack of ambition.

It might actually be the most honest ambition there is.

Finding a Purpose. The strange moment when you realize the life you built may not be the one you actually wanted.
