I think my previous therapist wasn't very good for me

Venting

So, I saw a clip from "Mitchell & Webb Are Not Helping" (a sort of sequel to their previous sketchshows) and one sketch was about a therapist who just offers "awws" and "that must feel bad" and never offers any real, actionable help. I'll include the link here and I will repost without the link if it gets removed. https://youtu.be/Bx2JA8KzV3s

Anyway, the sketch did remind me of my previous therapist, and how little momentum there was in some sessions. They were extremely kind and patient, but never offered anything in terms of a way to overcome my issues. Sometimes I'd flat-out ask them to tell me what to do, and they would ask me to do breathing exercises, or some form of "We will build up to that", but never actually making progress.

I'm not trying to badmouth my therapist or anything. I definitely made improvements and became more emotionally stable after my sessions with them, but our sessions were really just venting and talking, nothing really practical, I suppose.

This may have been my fault, since I was stubborn when it came to progress. Whenever they would ask me to journal, or even just to breathe, I'd feel slighted or like I was being shut up because I was too boring or aggravating. So it could have been on me. But I made the decision to end our sessions together because it felt like nothing was ever happening. It was nice to vent, but when that's all I was ever doing, I felt crap.

My new therapist, who received no notes or info about me from my previous T, per my request, experienced about 5 or 6 sessions with me before recommending EMDR. It sounds like a good idea, given my fears and defenses I've built up, and I'm really excited for it. It just feels nice to have a therapist that is proactive and wants to try things to help me improve.

Thanks for reading.
