Jerry vs. "Garcia"
Random, but after being a longtime Dead enjoyer I've been getting more into the documentaries and interviews to learn about the history of the band. One pattern I noticed is around what different kinds of people call JG. The closest circle - band and family members - call him Jerry. But the next layer out - people who worked with the band directly in all sorts of ways - often call him "Garcia." This includes crew, sometimes bandmates and OG heads who hung with him early on. Then you go out into the wider world of heads and fans, and it's Jerry again.
What does "Garcia" signify? It may just be what people in his orbit actually called him; using last names is a pretty common practice. But to me, just guessing, it also signals a little distance from the hero worship and parasocial closeness that fans adopt. Like, yeah he was amazing, but he was a real guy I knew, not a mythical figure.
I don't know, I'm overthinking. Anyone else?
