I love Mitski’s super quiet harmonies <3

Discussion

Listening to Carry Me Out on headphones right now and I noticed a countermelody harmony that I’ve never heard before (@ 2:05). In my shitty headphones, it’s only in the right ear and pretty buried in the mix, but it adds such a nice spark. That reminded me of the lower harmony in Townie that I always sing along to, but it’s so quiet in the mix that until my friend heard me singing it in the car, she didn’t even know it was in there.

It’s just a really subtle trait of her music, but I really love how much these harmonies add to the atmosphere of the piece without distracting from the main melodic content. Each part fleshes out the auditory soundscape, but blends cohesively into the body of the work.

As a classical musician, I think Mitski’s style of layering is enigmatic of many classical composers (probably thanks in part due to her training). Her method of composition is rather orchestral despite her rarely using a “full” band. Her audio mixing sounds complex and multi-layered, rather than the more flat mixing of most contemporary indie artists, or the more radio-friendly rock or pop music.

anyways done rambling I just love mitski and her artistry <3
