LD my whole life but never had a nightmare play out like this before. Would appreciate some advice/comfort if anyone has experienced this
(Sorry for wall of text, it’s not storytelling the dream, just context for what i just experienced)
Lucid dreaming has always been such a problem for me that sometimes I end up with severe sleep deprivation to avoid it bc I can’t prevent it. It’s hard to overstate the level of terror and paranoia lucid dreams does to me, especially the ones that mirror irl, and worse, false awakenings. I’ve learned to manage over time but today was the worst I’ve had.
It started harmless enough, 4-5 dreamscapes that kept cycling. None were intriguing, so I lounged about spectating. Suddenly, the scenes were glitching. it would rewind or skip patches. Some things kept repeating, or broke in continuity. Some sentences were cutting in and out mid syllable. I was getting annoyed so I stopped letting it shuffle. the next dreamscape happened to be my room. This part is important: it’s the exact same room i’m asleep in, clutter and all, which is very unusual. Typically when i dream of irl settings, it’s only general, not the exact current state it’s in. This unsettled me so I pull myself out.
The next dreamscape was the first one. There was nothing familiar in this one, which is odd. i rarely don’t get somewhat recurring settings. Then two masked intruders. Terror. i didn’t expect the scenario to escalate, but then i saw a knife.
Immediately I put my hands to my ears to block out the incoming sounds as I pull myself out of that dreamscape, but not quick enough. Then something i’ve never experienced before: the scapes just kept cycling, like those old photo film reels you put on the projector to view. I couldn’t land in any of them. Worse, so much worse yet, i heard her bloodcurdling scream through all of them as i watched the reels of sceneries shuffle before me. It was like the dream machine itself broke. Then pause back to the same room, the violence was indescribable. Immediately i exited again. I heard the end of her scream as my eyes flew open staring at my own bedroom door.
For a while, I couldn’t move. Not from sleep paralysis, but from fear I had brought them from the dreamscape of that living room to the dreamscape of my room (in case this is a false awakening and i’m still dreaming). I hear my boyfriend get ready for work, and realize I’m awake truly. I should be relieved, but I’m paranoid now. i heard the end of her scream as I’m looking straight at my own door. that’s not possible unless: i was still dreaming, or i hallucinated that when i woke up. I spent the last two hours lying here drenched in fear and confusion. contemplating whether spiritually or religion or medication. I can’t shake the unease that nightmare gave me. Please someone tell me something rational or comforting.
Tldr: I just heard a scream extend from a dream into the waking world, after not being able to control my dream planes as usual, all of this exacerbated by a hyper realistic dreamscape. I’m terrified of what happened in the dream, the dream itself, and the fact that it made me question my discernment of reality
