My date told of how he engaged in unprompted violence in the past and now I am unsure if that might indicate violent tendencies in a relationship.
Hello Reddit! I am in a small bind...
tl;dr: My date talked about how he engaged in violent behaviour in the past and how he pushed a woman into a potentially dangerous situation as a consequence of her being "ungrateful". As I have had traumatic experiences in the past, that could have been avoided by taking earlier red flags seriously, I am now unsure how to move forward. Especially so given the fact that I did feel some chemistry between us and he seems like a genuinely good guy apart from this one thing.
[TW: Domestic Abuse, SA] Will be in a spoiler. Also keeping it vague as I know he uses Reddit.
After spending some time single by choice I (F30) dipped my toe into online dating again. I actually found with someone(M early 30's), who on paper is a pretty good match for me.
He and I share the same values and hobbies. He's a good listener but also able to communicate. The conversations we had were interesting and he's an open, honest and upfront person, which I personally value a lot in a human.
On our date a few days ago, we talked for hours but it seemed like minutes.
The thing I am now mulling over in my head, were two things he said towards the end of our date.
First he told me about how he would get into violent altercations in school about which he seemed to be somewhat proud.
Now, that was well over a decade ago and well before he finished growing up. So I wouldn't judge him over something he did as a child.
Buuut there was another comment, that had my hackles rise.
He did not become violent towards another woman directly. But in the situation he talked about, he put another woman into harms way as a form of punishment for her inconveniencing him in a way that might not have been intentional. He seemed to take it personal as in that specific situation he was "protecting" her as he put it and she was being "ungrateful".
Now as the exact context is really specific I don't wanna go into too much detail. Ultimately it is not a given that the woman was injured as a consequence of his action. I have put myself voluntarily into these situations, I know they can be certainly scary but are not necessarily dangerous as people who do these things are usually attentive and not intent on causing harm to others.
But as a woman, especially if you are on the shorter side, people might not see you, where the whole thing can get really bad... so a man doing something like this intentionally... scares me a bit.
Also I have regularly experienced physcial violence at a younger age, not from a romantic partner but someone else in my life.
On top of that I was in a relationship with a Pig of a guy while still a teen, who proudly told me of [TW: Domestic Abuse] >! how he broke his wardrobe by physically throwing his ex girlfriend into it. !<
Back then I had only a vague inkling how much of a red flag that was and made the mistake of continuing the relationship. That did not result in Pig outright injuring me, like he did with his ex but he did something else that traumatised me [TW: SA] >!aka. raping me after getting really hammered on his birthday.!<
Those experiences might have me a bit more cautious and sensitive to the matter. For looking at it logically and knowing the the scene my date belongs to, what he told me, does not necessarily equate to him being violent in a relationship.
Especially since he told me of it on our first date, would be really stupid if he had been violent towards his ex-partners in the past.
Ultimately I like him a lot and really enjoyed our date. He also has some major green flags. He for example complimented my vast knowledge of my special interest without being salty. (Most guys are, as it's a stereotypically more masculine subject and they will usually begin to mansplain me.)
He also appears to be a genuinely nice guy. And he is really honest.. which I already listed.. but to me that's suuuper important.
Also I have my own baggage and I don't know when the whole debacle happened and if it was recent or not.
In the end, I have done really shitty things in the past that would certainly serve as red flags as well, had I not learned from them and bettered myself.
Then I am also unable to gauge if he is interested in me back.. and in such situations I tend to sabotage myself by just rejecting them before they can reject me. Which is not healthy either.
I do want to go on a second date.. but I also don't want to miss any red flags. Especially when it could be one which, if ignored, has consequences that endanger not only my mental but physical wellbeing.
What do you think? Could his words be pointing towards violent tendencies or was it just him having strange notions of what impresses a woman?
Should I go on a second date and communicate my worries? Or cut my losses while it won't hurt as much?
