I live in an old farmhouse with balloon framing in Wisconsin (built around 1920) and I am rewiring the second floor with romex. I am bringing the Romex from the electrical box in the basement to the Attic floor joists above the second floor by way of an old chimney. The chimney has an opening in the basement and has been cut off just above the attic floor. It no longer goes out of the attic and through the roof and so is protected from the elements and a completely dry environment.

I would like to run some sort of liner down the chimney to protect the Romex from the dust and soot that I cannot clean out of the chimney walls. The chimney interior space is about 11 in wide by 8 in deep. If I remove more of the chimney I would have about 3-5 ft of clearance above the current opening for the chimney looking down into the chimney while standing on the attic floor.

Currently I am planning on creating a hole in the chimney at the level of the joist to easily transfer the Romex from the chimney onto the joists. Can you help me brainstorm some materials I could potentially use as a liner?

PVC pipe with holes drilled in it to keep moisture from building up inside might be one option. Another thought I had was using something similar to that Slinky like material that comes out of the back of a dryer. I'm not really sure what to use or if there are particular risks involved in different types of material...fire for example.

The other option would be to run the Romex up through the old laundry chute. This is a little bit more complicated in a way because the laundry chute was cut out to make way for a refrigerator at one point on the first floor so I would have to kind of rebuild that aspect of the chute... But the upside to the laundry chute is that it's a clean environment.

I've included a photo of the chimney in the Attic as well as the laundry chute opening and the chimney opening in the basement.

Your advice would be very valuable.

Chimney liner?? for Romex run? Or laundry chute. Suggestions needed.
