Swiggy delivery guy asked for extra money after I updateda ddress by 2 km. Did I handle wrong?
I had a strange experience with a Swiggy order today and wanted to know if others have faced something similar.
After placing the order, I realized I needed to change the delivery address. Swiggy allows you to modify the address before a delivery partner is assigned, so I updated it in the app. The new address was only about 2 km away from the original one, and the app confirmed the change successfully.
After that, a delivery partner got assigned.
A few minutes later he called me and asked if I had changed the address. I said yes. Then he told me he had already traveled about 5 km to reach the restaurant, and because the address changed he had to travel further. He then asked me to pay ₹50 extra directly to him, otherwise he said he would cancel the order so someone else could take it.
I told him ₹50 seemed too much for just a 2 km difference and that I could tip ₹20 instead. He said he would cancel the order, but eventually he didn’t cancel and delivered it.
However, when he arrived he was clearly upset and told me something like “have some human decency.” It made the interaction uncomfortable.
I ended up giving a low rating, but I was still planning to tip ₹20. Unfortunately after rating, the app didn’t show the option to tip anymore.
So I’m wondering:
- If I changed the address before a delivery partner was assigned, wouldn’t they already see the updated address when accepting the order?
- Does Swiggy not compensate delivery partners if the address changes slightly (like 2 km)?
- Is it normal for delivery partners to ask customers directly for extra money like this?
I understand delivery partners work hard, so I wasn’t trying to be unfair. But the demand for extra money and the rude interaction made the situation uncomfortable.
Just curious if others have faced something like this and whether I handled it the right way.
