AITAH for refusing to pay my in-laws after they blamed me for what happened to my husband?

English Second Language

I never imagined I would be in a situation like this, and I honestly still feel like my life turned upside down in a matter of days.

A few weeks ago my husband got into serious trouble while traveling for work. I won’t go into every detail for privacy reasons, but the situation involved people demanding a large amount of money to solve the problem he got himself into. It was terrifying and stressful, and I was doing everything I could to figure out what to do.

The worst part wasn’t even the situation itself. It was how my in-laws reacted.

Instead of supporting me, they immediately started blaming me for everything. According to them if I had been a better wife my husband wouldn’t have been in that situation in the first place. I was shocked because I had nothing to do with what happened.

They kept calling me nonstop, telling me that it was my responsibility to fix everything and come up with the money. The amount they were talking about was far more than I could ever afford on my own.

I tried explaining that I was already doing everything I could but it felt like they just wanted someone to blame. Every conversation ended with them accusing me of not caring enough about my husband.

At one point they even told me that if something happened to him it would be on me.

That was the moment something inside me broke. I realized I was being treated like I was responsible for a situation I didn’t create.

I told them clearly that I would help however I reasonably could, but I would not take full responsibility or destroy my own future financially to satisfy their demands.

Now they are telling relatives that I refused to save my husband and that I chose money over his life.

Hearing that has been devastating, because I know how hard I tried to handle the situation.

So now I’m left wondering

AITAH for refusing to take full responsibility and pay everything when my in-laws say it’s my duty as his wife?
