As we know, during the 2008 United States presidential debates, Barack Obama and Joe Biden both stated that they opposed same-sex marriage, although they supported protecting LGBTQ people from discrimination.

In 2010, the Obama administration repealed Don't Ask, Don't Tell, which was mainly aimed at ending discrimination against LGBTQ people in the military rather than endorsing same-sex marriage.

However, in 2012 during an interview on Meet the Press, Biden publicly expressed support for same-sex marriage. This surprised many people because Obama had not yet announced the same position. It also put Obama in a politically tough situation, and shortly afterward he announced that he also supported same-sex marriage. Since then, the Democratic Party has become widely known as the party that strongly supports LGBTQ rights.

My question is: If Biden had stayed silent or continued opposing same-sex marriage in 2012, would Obama have remained opposed for longer? And would the Democratic Party still have evolved into the strongly pro-LGBTQ party it is today, or would the party have stayed more moderate or internally divided on the issue?
