The Boston Symphony Orchestra has fired a rim shot heard ‘round the classical music world with their decision to not renew the contract of Music Director and Composer Andris Nelsons.

In the US, Nelsons made his first guest-conducting appearance with the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO) in March 2011, as an emergency substitute for James Levine at Carnegie Hall. He subsequently guest-conducted the BSO at the Tanglewood Music Festival in July 2012, and made his first appearance with the BSO at Symphony Hall, Boston in January 2013.

In May 2013, the BSO named Nelsons as its 15th music director effective the 2014/15 season. His initial contract was for 5 years and stipulated 8 to 10 weeks of scheduled appearances in the first year of the contract and 12 weeks in subsequent years.

Nelsons held the title of Music Director Designate in the 2013/14 season. In August 2015, the BSO announced the extension of Nelsons's contract as music director through the 2021/22 season with a new contract, for eight years, that replaced the initial five-year contract, and also contained an evergreen clause for automatic renewal. In October 2020, the BSO announced a further extension of Nelsons' contract as music director through August 2025, with an evergreen clause for automatic renewal. In January 2024, the BSO announced the conversion of Nelsons' contract as its music director to a rolling evergreen contract. On March 6, 2026, the orchestra's board announced that Nelsons would be leaving at the end of the summer 2027 Tanglewood season.

“The decision to not renew his contract was made by the BSO's board of trustees because, beyond our shared desire to ensure our orchestra continues to perform at the highest levels, the BSO and Andris Nelsons were not aligned on future vision.”

I’m not a BSO insider so I have to speculate (just like almost everyone else), about what happened to precipitate this sudden falling out between Andris and the Boston hierarchy, and the only note that I did take over the years was that when he ascended to the podium in Boston, he did not rise entirely on his own merits, he came with an opera star celebrity wife, Latvian soprano Kristīne Opolais. They came as a package, but he exits on his own following their March 27, 2018 divorce. I remember noting at that time that his tenure could eventually be undermined by the termination of their marriage/partnership. There was certainly no immediate consequences as he was renewed in 2020, and evergreened in 2024, but you really never know when the ice started cracking, especially when the organization issues nebulous statements like “not aligned on future vision”, which is basically code for “none of your business”.

There has been a drumbeat of opinion about him being too busy being on the road as a guest Conductor (he’s currently on tour with the Vienna Philharmonic), but as far as I’m concerned that’s a bunch of “who shot John”, if you’ll pardon my Judge Judy. Every major Conductor in the world is running around with every other orchestra as much as they can possibly get away with. The promiscuity of Conductors is a cliche. It’s entirely understood. Nobody really gets fired for getting around. Which leaves us right where we started, scratching our heads. Andris will be just fine. He’s already got other places to hang his hat. 🎩
