Ghost Trio Slow movement tempo

Learning this piece at the moment. It's written in 2/4 with an incredible number of subdivisions. it's usually played at around quaver =36 or so. Seems impossible for it to feel like 2/4 given the tempo. Is it secretly in a very slow 4/4. How do you feel the beat in this piece. Awesome piece btw
