Pakistani PharmD student, first US visa, B1 for pharmacy conference — should I apply? Detailed profile inside

Long post, sorry — want genuine opinions before I spend money on this.

Background

Pakistani citizen, early 20s, unmarried male. Currently a 3rd-year PharmD student at a private university in Pakistan. About 2 years left before graduation.

Originally from Lahore but I've lived in UAE for 12 years — parents work there and I did most of my schooling in the UAE. I have UAE family residency through my parents (Emirates ID). In the last 2 years of uni I've been going back and forth — 8 trips to UAE, always came back on time without any issues.

No prior US visa. No prior US travel. No violations anywhere.

Purpose of visit

I have a student poster at the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting in Orlando, Florida — December 6–9, 2026. It's on palbociclib therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) using Monte Carlo PK/PD simulation. I am also presenting the same research at a domestic conference (Islamabad) earlier this year so it's not a one-off.

Trip would be 7–10 days maximum, purely for the conference.

Academic/research profile

  • Published paper in an HEC Category Y journal (pharmacogenomics-guided dosing for TB drugs)
  • Book chapter with a DOI (co-authored with my pharmacology professor)
  • Two conference poster presentations on the same research topic (domestic + ASHP)
  • GitHub repo for the simulation code

Plan to bring all of this to the interview.

Documents I'll have

  • ASHP conference registration + acceptance letter (poster) if available at time of interview.
  • Letter from my dean on university letterhead confirming enrollment, that I'm representing the university, and listing specific exams/courses I must return for in January 2027
  • My published paper and book chapter printouts
  • domestic conference certificate

Finances — this is my concern

My own bank balance is around $1,000 USD. I'm a student, no income.

My aunt in the US (Green Card holder) is sponsoring the trip. She can show around $15,000 in her account. She'll write a detailed sponsorship letter covering flights, accommodation, and expenses, which will be notarised.

Trip cost estimate is around $3,000–4,000 total.

The concern

I know young, single, Pakistani male, first US visa is basically the worst demographic combination for a B visa. I'm not naive about that. What I'm hoping is that the conference purpose is specific enough, the research trail is documented enough, and the travel history clean enough to get past 214(b).

Applying from Islamabad. Current wait time is around 6–7 months so I'd be interviewing around September 2026 for a December trip.

Questions:

  1. Is this worth applying for given the profile, or is it throwing money away? (recent geopolitics such as iran conflict and trump admin hostility)
  2. Does the conference poster + research trail actually help meaningfully or do officers ignore it?
  3. Anyone with a similar profile (student, Pakistani, first visa, conference) who got approved or denied — what was your experience?
  4. Any red flags in my documentation plan I'm missing?

Thanks in advance.
