India and it’s environmental crisis, part 1 AI
AI has been a constant point of discussion in india with it putting its best efforts to be in the ai war but is it really necessary keeping india’s condition in mind? Shweta tyagi, chief functionary at the Indian water foundation has said that the real challenge is not digital growth per se,but aligning it with india’s hydrological realities and ensuring that technological development does not out pace ecological limits.India being home to over 18% of the global population has only 4% of the fresh water supply.India is already in a water crisis and opening data centre’s for ai deepens the struggle not only that, but the data centre’s are being built at places which are already facing a water shortage take for example, hyderabad it is projected to have an acute water shortage of 909 million litres a day. In 2023 a group of 56 farmers and local villagers filed a court case in telangana high court against microsoft and dozens of other companies and government bodies, alleging they illegally occupied land beyond what was proposed for thier data centres and that they disposed industrial trash in a nearby lake
One of the major factors because of which ai is being introduced is to tackle unemployment in india which isn’t even in accordance with the annual budget of india, with over 250 crore rupees earmarked for content creation,be it animation, gaming, comics or digital story telling.AI is already a major concern in these sectors because of its ability to replace them.the government could and CAN make investments towards making jobs in areas such as and related to :-
i)public surveys
ii)analysts analysing the data from the public surveys to develop infrastructure and other sectors
iii)after introducing new policies, deploying people to check and enforce the policy immediately
there are many, much more ways by which these problems can be tackled however, only one does not make us regret it. Dr.Ambedkar once said, ‘justice will not be granted by others.the sufferers must secure justice for themselves’.
#stand up for yourself,India.
