Do Prince William and Kate Middleton really serve a purpose in the United Kingdom?

I’m French, so I’m looking at this from an outsider’s perspective without much knowledge. I wonder whether, since they can’t express themselves politically, they really serve any purpose or help their country. I’m sorry if my question comes across as awkward. I honestly have no idea how important these two are considered by people in the United Kingdom.
