Liberals of Reddit, do you believe your political beliefs make you a better person?

Random Question 💭

I’m genuinely trying to understand something since Reddit is very left leaning, no rage bait.

For context, I’m a moderate and have only ever voted Democrat. But one thing I struggle to align with in modern liberal culture is the sense of self righteousness from the left.

A lot of people on the left present themselves as morally superior, like they’re the ones who truly care about the less fortunate and are the least racist group. But from my personal experience, a lot of them are equally as racist as conservatives but they package themselves nicer.

I’m an Asian man, and something I’ve noticed is that many white liberals, especially white liberal women, run in very homogeneous social circles. They present themselves as extremely anti-racist, but in practice they look down on or exclude groups like East Asian or Indian men socially or culturally. Loving Black culture or advocating for Black causes doesn’t automatically mean someone isn’t racist toward other groups.

Another thing I find confusing. It sometimes feels like support for minority groups is conditional on those minorities sharing the same political views. If a Black person turns out to be conservative, suddenly the tone toward them changes. Are people actually defending Black people as individuals, or only the ones who agree politically?

I also wonder how many people who speak loudly about these issues actually have close friendships with the communities they defend. Most of my Muslims or Black American men I know personally hold traditional views on relationships, gender roles, or religion, views that overlap with someone like Charlie Kirk.

Most of my friends, including myself, are ethnic minorities who grew up either in the hood or hood-adjacent environments. We didn’t really have the luxury to spend our time thinking about abstract political identity debates. Our main focus was simply getting out of poverty and building stable lives.

From what I’ve seen, many of the loudest white liberals today grew up in middle to upper-middle class. They strongly dislike billionaires, but at the same time they have very little real exposure to the communities they claim to advocate for. Their friend groups are still overwhelmingly white, but they position themselves as the moral authority on racism.

So my genuine question to liberals here is this:

Do you believe your political beliefs make you a better or more moral person than others? And do you actually know what or who you’re advocating?
