Understanding the Differences Between the First and Second Editions

The **Jean-Paul Gaultier Shoulder Birkin 42** is one of the more interesting departures Hermès made from the traditional Birkin formula.

Instead of designing a completely new bag, Hermès essentially **re-engineered the Birkin to be worn on the shoulder**, extending the handle drop and subtly adjusting proportions.

What many people don’t realize is that **two different constructions exist**:

• **Shoulder Birkin 42 I — First Edition (early 2000s)**
• **Shoulder Birkin 42 II — Second Edition (later 2000s)**

At a glance they look almost identical, but structurally they are **quite different bags**.

# The Core Difference

The easiest way to understand the two versions is this:

**SB42 I feels closer to the HAC lineage.**
**SB42 II moves the design closer to the Birkin family.**

That shift affects the **panel construction, interior layout, and hardware configuration**.

# 1. Panel Construction

This is the **most obvious visual difference**.

# SB42 I — First Edition

The first edition includes a **vertical seam running down the center of the bag**.

• One seam on the **front panel**
• One seam on the **back panel**

This detail divides the leather panel in two and gives the bag a slightly more **architectural, HAC-like structure**.

Once you know to look for it, it’s **the fastest way to identify a first-edition JPG Shoulder Birkin**.

# SB42 II — Second Edition

The second edition removes this seam completely.

The panels become:

• **Single uninterrupted front panel**
• **Single uninterrupted back panel**

Without the seam, the bag looks **cleaner and more Birkin-like**.

This small change significantly alters the visual feel of the bag.

# 2. Interior Layout

Another interesting difference is the **interior construction**.

# SB42 I

The first edition has a **completely clean interior**.

• No pockets
• Fully leather lined
• One uninterrupted interior panel

This is fairly unusual compared to most Birkin configurations.

# SB42 II

The second edition introduces a **more familiar Birkin-style interior layout**.

The bag now includes:

• Interior pockets
• More structured internal organization

This change reflects the broader shift toward **Birkin-style construction in the later version**.

# 3. Hardware Architecture

One defining feature of the **JPG Shoulder Birkin** that often gets overlooked is the **lock and clochette size**.

Both editions use **larger hardware than a standard Birkin**.

• The **padlock is noticeably larger**
• The **clochette is proportionally larger**

This oversized hardware is intentional and part of the bag’s design identity.

# SB42 I Hardware

The first edition follows a **more HAC-leaning hardware architecture**.

• HAC-style **touret (turnlock plate)**
• HAC-style **turnlock**
• HAC-style **pontets (sangle holders)**
• HAC-style **hardware plaques**

The engraving style follows the **older Hermès format with no dash separators**.

# SB42 II Hardware

The second edition shifts into a **hybrid configuration**.

Some elements move toward Birkin construction, while others remain HAC-inspired.

Hardware details include:

• **Hardware plaques:** HAC style
• **Engraving:** no dash separators

While the structural components follow Birkin specifications:

• **Touret:** Birkin style
• **Turnlock:** Birkin style
• **Pontets:** Birkin style

However, the **oversized lock and clochette remain**, continuing the distinctive proportions of the Shoulder Birkin.

# Quick Way to Tell Them Apart

**First Edition (SB42 I)**

• Vertical seam on front and back panels
• No interior pockets
• Hardware architecture closer to HAC

**Second Edition (SB42 II)**

• No vertical seam
• Interior pockets added
• Hybrid hardware configuration
• Birkin-leaning construction

The Shoulder Birkin 42 is a good example of how Hermès designs **quietly evolve over time**.

The silhouette remained largely unchanged, but the **construction philosophy shifted** — moving from something closer to the HAC lineage toward something more aligned with the Birkin family.

For collectors and enthusiasts, these kinds of subtle structural changes are often what make the deeper study of Hermès bags interesting.
