Why is “MILF” a top porn category if men are only attracted to young women?

Question For Men

Why do some men privately desire sexually experienced women but publicly shame them at the same time?

Because youth and vitality are often overstated in discussions about attraction. For example “MILF” consistently ranks among the most popular porn categories for male audiences. This complicates the claim that men are exclusively attracted to very young women. Likewise many women in their 20s report finding men in their 30s or 40s attractive, even when those men are not particularly wealthy.

The idea that “women expire at 25” looks more like a cultural meme than a scientific claim. In practice real relationship patterns tend to show moderate age differences rather than extreme ones. A common mistake in these discussions is turning statistical tendencies into rigid rules. But:

1.	Statistics alone cannot tell us whether a pattern is biological, cultural or a mix of both (nature-nurture debate)

2.	Population-level statistics cannot be used to make deterministic claims about individuals

The claim that women are only attracted to older men because of money also ignores other factors such as lifestyle alignment, perceived maturity, social competence and confidence. These traits often increase with age and can make older men more attractive independent of wealth.

Confidence itself is consistently reported as attractive by both genders. This may partly explain why some women are drawn to older men: with more life experience often comes greater emotional stability, social ease and a clearer sense of identity.

And porn categories make this even more obvious. Porn obviously reflects fantasy rather than relationship preferences, but it still reveals what people find sexually exciting. If men were only attracted to youth, you wouldn’t see categories like MILF, stepmom, teacher, boss etc. dominating search statistics. These archetypes explicitly centre maturity, experience and authority, which suggests male fantasy often includes attraction to women who are older, more assertive and sexually confident.

Which brings up an interesting paradox: some men strongly desire sexually liberated women, while simultaneously slut-shaming them. On the one hand they fantasise about experienced women. On the other hand they complain that “modern women are promiscuous” and say they want a “young inexperienced virgin”. Yet those same men often online complain that their conservative wives are “passive starfish who only want sex in missionary 3 times a year…”

One possible explanation about these sexual scripts is performance anxiety. If sex is perceived as a performance where male competence is evaluated, then an experienced woman can feel intimidating because she might have “points of comparison”. In that mindset an inexperienced partner may feel safer. Ironically this can lead to men shaming the very women they are actually attracted to. The sexually confident woman becomes both the fantasy and the threat.

And I know the usual counterargument here is: “Sure men fantasize about sluts or MILFs, but that doesn’t mean they want to date them. Those women are for sex, not relationships.” But that distinction kind of proves the paradox rather than resolving it. If the traits that make someone sexually attractive are things like confidence, sexual openness and experience, why would those same traits suddenly make someone less desirable as a partner? It starts to look less like a question of pure attraction and more like comfort and perceived risk. An experienced woman might be exciting sexually, but also intimidating if you think sex is some kind of performance where you’re being evaluated against previous partners. In that case the “young inexperienced virgin” isn’t necessarily more attractive as a partner, she just feels safer and less threatening to your ego. So you end up with this weird split where the woman men actually fantasize about and the woman they think they should date are two different archetypes. And that split is probably doing a lot of the work behind the whole “sluts vs wives” rationalisations.

In reality sexual intimacy is rarely about technical comparison. If sex were framed less as a performance to be judged and more as mutual exploration and vulnerability, some of these contradictions would probably disappear. Also, seen from this perspective attraction is not simply about age itself, but about traits correlated with age (such as confidence, maturity, social competence…). This makes the simplistic narrative that attraction is purely about youth simply harder to sustain.

TLDR:

Attraction isn’t just about youth. Traits that often increase with age (such as confidence, maturity, sexual experience…) are attractive too. But when men see sex as a performance to be judged, it creates a paradox: fantasizing about sexually confident women (MILFs) while simultaneously idealizing the “young inexperienced virgin” who feels safer and less intimidating within their comfort zone.
