Show r/ClaudeAI: I built Foreman with Claude Code – an open source Slack bot that gives you a remote control for Claude Code

Built with Claude

Hey r/ClaudeAI — wanted to share something I've been working with called Foreman. It's free and open source.

Of course it was built with Claude Code - so if you dig 'Claude all the way down' this is for you.

The basic idea is that Claude Code runs locally on your Mac, and Foreman lets you control it from Slack. The main reason I built it was so I could send tasks to Claude from my phone while away from my desk and not have to run back to my laptop every five minutes.

(No fancy demo video like Anthropic's — just a README and a hope that it works on your machine too.)

How it's different from Anthropic's official Slack integration:

Anthropic's version is cloud-based — you describe a task and it runs on their servers. Foreman is more like a remote control for a local Claude Code instance. Claude has full access to your filesystem, your tools, your environment. Nothing leaves your machine.

What it does:

• Each Slack channel gets its own independent Claude Code session

• Name a channel #clive or #betty and the bot adopts that persona (this one is just fun)

• File edits and shell commands show Approve/Deny buttons so you stay in control from your phone

• Read-only tools are auto-approved so you're not tapping buttons constantly

• Load local Claude Code plugins per channel with /cc plugin <path> — handy if you're building and testing your own plugins

Getting started (free):

npm install -g foreman-bot

foreman init

foreman init walks you through creating the Slack app and setting up your tokens. Takes maybe 5 mintues.
