Doctor Who references in Icons: Unearthed: Marvel

Episode 7 of Icons Unearthed documentary series on Marvel, Testing the Limits looks at the making of the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie.

The Guardians team in their film series is based on the 2008 comic book team written by British comic book writers Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning.

Narrator Joseph Culp says that Abnett and Lanning's said work was not influenced by them consuming Marvel cartoons growing up but instead by British sci fi with Culp mentioning Doctor Who as one of three British sci fi shows consumed by Abnett and Lanning (the others being Thunderbirds & Space 1999).

With Culp mentioning Doctor Who came the picture of Tom Baker as the Fourth Doctor and Lis Sladen as Sarah Jane Smith from The Seeds of Doom.

Later on in this episode came the casting of Karen Gillan as Nebula.

On Karen as Nebula, Guardians of the Galaxy editor Fred Raskin said about a friend of his who is into Doctor Who and expressed excitement on Karen's said casting.

As Raskin said that came the picture of Karen as Amy, Matt Smith as the Doctor, Arthur Darvill as Rory, Riann Steele as Queen Nefertiti and Rupert Graves as Riddell from Dinosaurs on a Spaceship.

This picture of Dinosaurs on a Spaceship is from the moment when they first see a dinosaur on the said spaceship.

Although not explicitly a Doctor Who reference, later on from Karen's casting as Nebula, the episode presented David Tennant's picture with Culp stating that Tennant was a possible voice of Rocket the Raccoon before it went to Vin Diesel.

Outside of this documentary series however, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn refuted Tennant being a possible Rocket.
